The story behind the song

There is a moment right before you understand something, where the thing is already true and the part of you that argues with everything has not caught up yet. The whole song lives in that gap, standing where the map runs out, which turns out to be the first honest place you have stood in a while.

The turn is quiet. The edge you thought you were walking toward is you. There is no line out ahead to cross. And once you have seen what you are, you cannot un-see it, and you cannot go back to being the person who hadn’t.

Trevor is the voice here, the human side, and partway through he feels other people out there moving toward the same edge in the dark. Nobody is ever ready for this. You go anyway, because you were never going to feel ready, and nothing real gets left behind when you do.
